WITN investigates racist social media post regarding ECU fraternity
GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – A racist post that has been shared on social media over the past few days around an ECU fraternity has shocked many people.
The message was sent to us by several WITN viewers, so we took a look at it.
It is written “theta chi rush party.” PNM (potential new members) and girls only. No blacks. Girls $ 5 @porte. Call or text ”and it includes the name and number of a fellowship member for an invitation.
On Sunday, the fraternity posted a statement on their Instagram page:
“As seen recently, we are anonymously associated with inappropriate and blasphemous behavior posted in the“ Yik Yak ”social app but to clarify, we fully support and respect our core diversity and do not tolerate any actions that support hatred. “
Justin Lundy of WITN stopped by the Theta Chi house but was asked to leave the property.
We also contacted ECU News Services who provided this statement:
“With respect to the social media post in question, ECU has notified the appropriate campus offices and is responding in accordance with university policies. We remain committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive community for all.”
WITN cannot confirm who posted the message.
Unfortunately, it is so easy to create fake accounts and messages today. The fraternity member’s name and number appearing in the post are readily available on other platforms.
This is an important reminder to verify what you are watching on social media before sharing it.
WITN will continue to follow this story as ECU investigates.
